Circles and Curves Shoot 7

Circles and Curves Shoot 7

Plans for shoot
To experiment taking photos out of the studio and to use new and old photos to overlay and create circles and curves on Photoshop. For example a plain concrete wall can be used to create images on in Photoshop.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My ideas for this shoot was to photograph different patterns that I will then edit onto other images I've taken as an overlay. With these photos I have experimented with different apertures and focus to then see which looks better as a background. To get these images I found different patterns, for example wallpapers and photographed them. I photographed these photos in direct sunlight at a birds eye view; This technique worked, however sometimes sunlight was inconsistent ( shadows ) and most of my images aren't straight or centred properly. To improve this I could've hung the patterns up or went out to find any patterns and then use a tripod. I will be using previous photos to experiment with these patterns and editing, using different blending tools and changing the opacity to find a desired look. I will then take new photos to use for final edits.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I will be using Photoshop and experimenting with these images to use as backgrounds or to add patterns to other objects.

In the image above I have layered one of my images over the top and then lowered the opacity to 55% , I then changed the blend to 'Darken' and I really love the result of this. I further explored the different blends and found a few more of my favourite results displayed below.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Images that require improvement

I have selected the following images above for all similar reasons. The way I was photographing there was a bigger chance for mistakes shown above to occur. In the images you can see a shadow, which is the cameras shadow of the lens. I knew to correct this I had to hold the camera further away from the object of focus, and to zoom in instead. Because of the constant need to move the camera around to get better angles and a better positioning, the focus in some of my images are all wrong. In some images the focus was not on the whole eye area, rather a specific part of the face. An example of that focus is shown in the last photo I selected, my eye is out of focus however my eye liner is in focus.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My intentions for this shoot was to photograph a make up look which incorporates  circles or curves into it. Initially I wanted to create a colourful and creative look, however I found the circles I had was too big to create a design just on the eye, so therefore I decorated around it. But as I experimented with other medias I had, I decided to use an eye liner to create a more finished make up look. I believe more details could've been added, for example eye shadow, however I am pleased with the outcome of the overall look. However I could improve this shoot by changing the way I am taking the photos. I could start by using a tripod to make my images more consistent and straight. I could also use a model rather than myself, a downside to this is that I am not as good doing make up on other people.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

To develop my images further I want to experiment with different filters, for example seeing the images in black and white or with a more vibrant saturation. I also need to clean up any blemishes or mistakes on the face, making the image look sharper and more professional.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

My research into make up looks helped to inspire me to use circles in a different way. I love how I used spots to create a cat eye and I believe it was very successful. My research into Irving Penn also influenced me to create something different, as his make up looks are all very abstract also.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

I have selected the image above because the camera wasn't positioned properly and therefore resulted in the focus being wrong as well. The models eyes are also looking too far right which I believe makes the image look wonky.

I have selected the image above because although it has good focus, the positioning is a bit off. However the main fault in the image, i believe, is the ring because the ring is very distracting and out of place.

I have selected this image because the camera was entirely out of focus and therefore the image being extremely blurry. You can also see shadows from the camera which covers spots and makes the image look very unprofessional.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

For this shoot I wanted to focus on the eyes by placing spots around the eyes and photographing only that area. I believe this shoot was successful as I have gotten some good photos out of this. My polka dots are a much nicer shape and are set out much better than previous shoots. Focusing on one area has been much better as its a lot harder to make mistakes with the polka dots; For example smudging. I also used my hand as another focus, however hands are more prone to smudging and therefore the circles and my hand looks messy. To progress and these shoots I may experiment with a different media, which is less prone to smudging, to create my circle patterns. I wish to create some makeup looks which also incorporates curves as well as circles.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

To further refine my work I will be using Photoshop; In Photoshop my main focus will be to make sure all the circles look neat and uniform and to remove any smudges. Overall to also make the image look more appealing.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

In my research I have found that images I would like to work from are using polka dots to create a finished make up look, however mine are just decorated spots around the eye area. In future shoots I want to use spots using make up to create a more finished look incorporating spots.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My ideas for this shoot was to try and express curves through paint, similar to Kwang. However I found that this shoot is one of my least successful shoots in this component. The paint on the face was smudged into curves to try and get the painting effect Kwang used,  but the paint doesn't really have any defined curves. With this shoot, I think any viewer who, who hadn't seen this shoot before, wouldn't understand my intentions. Therefore, to me this shows that my shoot wasn't successful.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

To make my intentions clearer and my images more refined, I am going to experiment in Photoshop adding my own curves to the images. I am hoping with some editing my images will also look better and not so messy. I have also left negative space in some of  my images so I can edit my own curves in as a background.

In this image, my intentions was to cover the negative space with a similar effect as the face but with more distinct curves. At first I didn't think it'd be successful, however the brush I have used, called Kyle's Real Oils, I believe has a great paint brush effect and has the perfect strokes and smudges. To further develop this image I want the edges to look a lot neater, as you can see where I've limited my strokes in order not to paint on my model. And I also want to use a blemish tool to remove any blemishes or smudges from the paint.  I also adjusted the saturation to make the image more vibrant.

To neaten up my strokes, I used the selection tool to select my model and I then cut and pasted my selection onto my background I created. I can see an improvement in this and it also allowed me to create better brush strokes. Another idea I had to neaten up the edges was to leave a negative space around the outside by rubbing it out, and either leaving it as it is or making it white. An Example of this is shown below.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

Through research I found that Kwang is an artist that uses medias such as oil, acrylic, and charcoal. An idea I could experiment with, is to print these images off and use these medias to get a more similar effect. I believe his medias can be used to really outline curves, for example in some of his images you can see contours and outlines in the faces.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Progression: To progress onto further shoots I plan on experimenting with a new media, rather than just paint on the face. I also need to present my intentions in clear and refined shoots.
